Movement and MS
A healthier lifestyle involves both the foods you eat and how you move your body. When living with MS, it's understandable to feel hesitant about movement. You might experience physical limitations or worry about aggravating symptoms—these feelings are valid. Remember that just like with diet, small steps toward incorporating movement into your routine can be beneficial for your physical and emotional well-being.
Here are a few accessible ways to stay active:
- Aerobic exercises: These can include going for a walk with your dog around the block (or on a treadmill), a water aerobics class, or cycling either at home or outdoors. These low-to-moderate impact activities are generally safe and can improve your cardiovascular health and boost your mood
- Strength or resistance training: Whether you train at home using your body weight, or you use a weight machine with a trainer at the gym, this form of movement can be great for strengthening your muscles and bones. Do what feels right for you
- Stretching: Yoga or guided stretches can be a great way to lengthen muscles, improve mobility, balance, and posture. And most importantly, it can be a great way to relax
Remember, living well with MS is about finding what works best for you, not striving for perfection. By making small, sustainable changes to your diet and incorporating regular physical activity into your routine, you can empower yourself to boost your energy and enhance your overall quality of life. Every step you take, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction.
